5 SEO Marketing Strategies to Avoid

Introduction:

This article, taken from our extensive SEO training lessons,  focuses on some specific SEO marketing strategies to avoid, but our SEO course goes into great detail about what search engine optimization methods do work, and work well.

A strong SEO plan is the cornerstone to a successful online marketing campaign – but that cornerstone isn't worth much if it's old and crumbling. We're going to take you through some old and tired SEO strategies that just don't work anymore, so that you don't mistakenly waste precious time on them.

It’s important to remember that each of these methods was relevant at one point, and even now still serves a particular purpose. The idea here is that you shouldn’t waste too much time or energy using any of these methods as a primary SEO-boosting strategy.

Don't apply the following SEO marketing methods:

1) Keyword Stuffing:

Before you throw your hands up and shout about how keyword stuffing works, I want to remind you why you're reading this – your SEO efforts are something you’re using to develop a lasting reputation as an authority in your field. By using unethical or “Black Hat” techniques, you end up destroying the very thing you want to create.

It is true, keyword stuffing can be an effective way to boost your website’s search engine ranking – temporarily. The problem is, once the search engines start to take notice of your site and see that it’s stuffed with random content, you run the risk of being permanently banned – thus destroying all your efforts. Oh, and you'll probably also piss off your customers…

Keyword Stuffing Example:

Avoid using black-hat SEO marketing strategies and tactics

It should also be noted that there really is no magical % for the number of times a keyword appears in your content. If your content is relevant to the keywords you’re using, they’re going to come up a few times naturally; another reason for you to focus your energies on producing great, quality content.

We recently consulted with one of our clients, a Seattle Florist who was working on boosting their SEO rankings. Prior to joining eMarketSchool, they had implemented some SEO-boosting techniques that they read about online, but were obviously not working. Specifically – keyword stuffing.

They had filled all their home-page, “about us” and “FAQ” sections with content that had little to do with their business and nothing to do with what their clients’ real FAQ were at all.

After re-writing their content, uploading a well thought out and informative FAQ page, and re-submitting their site index to several search engines, they began to see a gradual but steady rise in their online orders.

2) Meta Tags:

Let’s start with a brief history of Meta-tags. These were originally designed to help search engines quickly and effectively understand the purpose and theme of a web page. There are a number of different Meta-tags for any given web page (title, keywords, description, language, etc), which help describe the site to search engines.

The problem that developed is related to the topic we just covered above – keyword stuffing.

Webmasters started stuffing their meta-tags full of irrelevant keywords in order to boost their rankings. It got so out of hand that Search Engines just had to change their algorithms to lower the importance of meta-tags in order to remove the temptation.

That’s not to say that you should ignore them altogether. Remember that they did have a purpose originally, so plug in the relevant content and move on.

3) Image Alt Tags......................
