Introduction
As we disucuss is detail in our social media training course, web 1.0 provided us with passive content that we could read, interpret, and pass along if necessary. Web 2.0, on the other hand, has put the content into the hands of the user, allowing each of us to contribute our thoughts, ideas, pictures, and video to the ever growing social media community. Nowhere is this phenomenon more prevalent than with teenagers. Today we will attempt to find out just what teens are doing with social media (SM).
Super-Communicators
A subset of teens have even become what is known as “super-communicators” individuals who employ multiple technologies to connect with their network of friends and family, ranging from cell phones, texting, social network sites, instant messaging, to ordinary email. These super communicators represent about 28% of the entire population of 13-17 year olds and are more likely to be older teenaged girls.

In a study done by Pew Internet, it was learned that online media contributions by teenagers continues to grow, with 64% of online teens engaging in at least some type of content creation! It’s important to note that this number increased from 57% in 2004. The types of content that teens are providing to their peers and sometimes to the web community at large include:
- blogs (35% of girls and 20% of boys),
- photos (54% of girls and 40% of boys), and
- video (19% of boys and 10% of girls).
Not only are they posting this content, but they are also discussing it and commenting on it. Photos alone posted by teens receive comments 89% of the time according to the survey.
